Prevedouros Files For Mayor
Responding to a citizens Draft Panos for Mayor effort, Dr. Panos Prevedouros declared his candidacy for Mayor of The City and County of Honolulu. Panos is a naturalized U.S. citizen who has made Honolulu his home for the past 18 years.
I happen to have the expertise and the drive to fix the problems that face Oahu at this critical time in its history, said Panos. Everyone who lives here knows how bad our infrastructure is, and everyone is sick of hearing excuses from city government. Panos platform will focus on Traffic, Trash and Taxes.
The reason we all live here is quality of life said Panos. And if our infrastructure problems arent addressed properly for the long term, that quality of life will not be there for future generations. Everyone is sick of quick fixes, of filling a pothole in June only to have it reappear with the rains in February.
Were not talking rocket science here. The systems and the technology are there to fix our roads, improve our traffic flow, address the problems with trash, recycling and the sewage treatment plants. Part of the reason for the severe congestion on Oahu is because the traffic engineering toolbox is not used. Traffic signals are not synchronized and updated, incidents and accidents are not managed, and freeway bottleneck relief projects are not done.
As for pavements, Panos notes that statewide pavements are the second worst in the nation. And city roadway pavements are much worse than state highway pavements because of years of neglect. Oahus sewage management resulted in a billion dollar lawsuit from the Environmental Protection Agency for its lack of secondary sewage treatment. Any so-called fixes you see are reactive, not proactive like we have to be.
Taxpayers feel it in their wallets, but did you know, Panos asks That in four short years, tax collections went from $1.365 billion during the last fiscal year under Harris to $1,990 billion under Hannemann, a whopping 46% increase. Did you notice any part of city services improve by 46%?
Panos has taken a leave of absence from his position as professor of Civil Engineering at UH in order to run for Mayor. He is committed to solving Oahus infrastructure problems and putting us on the right road to the future. He plans to spend four years at Honolulu Hale and run for another four if the electorate will have him.
