This year, the technology sector is featured as a separate category and spotlights 10 executives. While the Hawai‘i Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism says that technology jobs have stagnated over the years, at just under 30,000 – or 3.2% of all civilian jobs in the state – it’s still a promising sector.

Cybersecurity and IT positions in Hawai‘i are projected to increase through the decade, according to UH Mānoa. Many of these positions are in non-tech companies, such as the six chief information officers scattered throughout Black Book. In the coming years, we hope more companies will bring their technology leaders into the executive ranks.

And we welcome others who would like to be in future editions. Black Book is largely comprised of leaders of Top 250 companies and nonprofits. Welcome to the 24th edition of Black Book, the largest annual roundup of profiles of Hawai‘i’s business and nonprofit leaders.

You’ll find profiles of 350 people: Many are well known, while others are establishing their reputations or working in less prominent roles to help their organizations succeed.

To prepare Black Book 2021, we surveyed companies in the fall and gathered biographical details about their highest-ranking executives. The surveyed companies appeared in Hawaii Business Magazine’s Top 250 list, which ranks companies and nonprofits based on annual gross revenue.

Black Book is primarily composed of these Top 250 executives, along with select leaders from Hawai‘i’s Best Places to Work and recent cohorts of emerging leaders from our 20 for the Next 20.

Moved to HI in ‘07 to take up the family business, working as a distributor sales representative, buyer, retail sales manager and VP before assuming head of company in January ‘17. Ueda is Suisan’s eighth president of the 111-year-old food distribution business. He applies analytical skills and data-driven expertise to increase operational efficiencies.
