![]() October 2008 | Top of the News Final Push for Candidates in General Election With the lowest Primary turnout ever of 36% on September 20, Hawaii gears up for the November 4 General Election. The major contest in the Primary was for Honolulu Mayor. Incumbent Mufi Hannemann was stymied in his quest to be reelected outright. He needed 50%+1 votes to win but only got 49%. He will face a runoff in the General with Councilmember Ann Kobayashi. Dr. Panos Prevedouros, first time candidate and non-politician, finished third with 18% and nearly 30,000 votes. His supporters may be critical to the November outcome. Hawaii small businesses have several reasons to be involved in the Election. Taxes, eminent domain against businesses and fees will be decided in this vote. There will be a question on rail for the City and a Constitutional Convention question for the state. (SBH strongly opposes rail and supports Con-Con). You must vote! There were few surprises in other contests in the Primary. Republicans failed to challenge more than 25 House & Senate seats. Most incumbents won except Sen. Ron Menor (Mililani) and Rep. Alex Sonson who challenged Sen. Clarence Nishihara. PAYCHECKS HAWAII, the private, independent, political action affiliate of Small Business Hawaii, announced its endorsements for the General Election. It is certain that after the November 4 election, majority Democrats will continue their hold on the Hawaii State Legislature (they currently outnumber Republicans in both Houses by nearly 5 to 1). Republican Senators are down to 3 of 25 members and while they have several good challenging candidates it will be an uphill battle for Ted Hong on the Big island, Jan Shields on Maui and Richard Falé on Oahu. Democrats are also targeting incumbent Gordon Trimble of Downtown/Waikiki and House members Colleen Meyer and Corrine Ching. Outcome of several House and Senate races may also decide the future of House Speaker Calvin Say and Senate President Colleen Hanabusa. Say has been under assault during the past two sessions while Hanabusa balances her past backing of Hillary Clinton for president and now Ann Kobayashi for Mayor which upsets some Democrats. Hawaii is also expected to vote heavily for "favorite son" Democrat Sen. Barrack Obama though the Sen. John McCain - Governor Sarah Palin campaign here has been energized with the Alaska Governor's addition to the GOP ticket. Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle, who spoke during the GOP convention on behalf of Palin, will spend much of the month of October on the Mainland stumping for McCain. While the Primary vote was embarrassingly low, there no doubt will be a sizeable increase in the General Election vote with seats to be decided, more issues, resolution of the $6 billon-plus heavy rail transit proposal and the frenzy that usually accompanies a presidential race. Remember, you have until October 6 to register if you are not registered, did not vote in the Primary, or have had a name or address change.
