Small Business Hawaii (SBH) is going through a major reorganization and part of the process is the introduction of new board members. The SBH board adopts policy positions and activities for the 2,000 business member group, founded in 1976 by Lex Brodie. Board members are volunteers and unpaid.

Former U.S. Congressman Ed Case, has joined the Board of Directors of Small Business Hawaii, effective July 1. Case, a Democrat, who served in the Hawaii State Legislature for 8 years, then in the U.S. House, challenged U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka in the 2006 Democrat primary. While in Congress, Case was a member of the Small Business Committee and has been a staunch defender of small business rights in Hawaii.

Also joining the board is young entrepreneur Matt Longfellow of ValPak Hawaii. Longfellow is a successful businessman who was recognized several years ago by SBH as "Young Entrepreneur of the Year."

Several additional new Board members will be named in the next several months.

SBH also is preparing to launch a 501(c) (3) Educational Foundation. SBH is a 501(c) (6) non profit corporation.

Continuing members of the SBH Board include; Joyce Edwards, The Systemcenter, Inc.; Walt Harvey, East Oahu Realty; Andrew Mertz, Andy's Pool Service; Matt Muccio, Techniques Hawaii, Inc.; Jack Schneider of JS Services; Bob Sigall, Creative-1/The Companies We Keep; Sam Slom, SMS Consultants, and Geal Talbert, Legacy Group Hawaii.

Retiring from the board after many years of community service are: Wayne Fukuda of Wheatgrass Pacifica; Mike Marsh of Case Lombardi & Pettit; and John Yanagihara of New England Financial.

Special Session Looms - Senate Reorganized

The 24th State Legislature adjourned May 3 but probably will be back in Special Session July 10. The majority party is expected to call for a special session to override more of Governor Linda Lingle's vetoes.

The Governor has signed about 200 measures into law and has until July 10 to decide on the remaining bills. Vetoes made during the session were overridden by the legislature on May 1 and 3.

Meanwhile, on May 30, Senate President Colleen Hanabusa announced that three state senators will voluntarily shift their committee assignments for the next legislative session, and a new committee will be created.

Senator Brian Taniguchi (District 10 - Manoa, Moli'ili, McCully, Makiki), formerly chair of the Commerce, Consumer Protection and Affordable Housing Committee, will assume the chairmanship of the Judiciary and Labor Committee. Current Judiciary and Labor chair Senator Clayton Hee (District 23 - Kahuku, Laie, Ka'awa, Kaneohe) will move over to chair the Water and Land Committee. Senator Russell Kokubun (District 2 - Waiakea Uka, Kalapana, Volcano, Kahuku), who has chaired the Water, Land, Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs Committee, will become chair of Commerce, Consumer Affairs, and Affordable Housing.

In addition, a new Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs Committee will be created, with Senator Jill Tokuda (District 24 - Kane‘ohe, Kane‘ohe MCAB, Kailua, Enchanted Lake) as chair.

The membership of some committees will also change, to accommodate the new assignments. The new assignments took effect immediately.
