Winnie Chan Appointed to SBH Board of Directors

Winnie Chan, the newest member of the Small Business Hawaii Board of Directors (effective December 1, 2007) is a composer, arranger, and a nationally certified piano and early childhood music teacher. Chan has been an active and involved member of SBH for many years and was a previous “Young Entrepreneur of the Year.”

Chan maintains and directs an independent music school of about 200 students and 10 employees near downtown Honolulu, and teaches at the Sacred Hearts Academy. Her school offers private and small group piano, music and theory lessons to people of all ages. Her existing students range from one to 80 years old, and have performed extensively in different venues in Hawaii, including the Mamiya Theatre, UH Orvis Auditorium and Ala Moana Shopping Center.

Besides serving on the SBH board, Ms. Chan is also currently the President of the Honolulu Piano Teachers’ Association and a board director of the UH College of Arts & Science Alumni Association. Chan specializes in helping people find their voice through music and claims that anyone with a heartbeat can learn to play the piano and make music.

Professor Schoolland
Congratulations to SBH member and Professor Ken Schoolland, the latest receipient of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii’s George Washington award for 2007. Schoolland is a professor at Hawaii Pacific University and is well known for his book on free market economics, Jonathan Gullible, A Free Market Odyssey. Schoolland was recognized at the 5th annual Grassroot Institute of Hawaii Awards Banquet held at the Hale Koa Hotel on November 3, 2007. Keynote speaker was Paul Jacob from the Sam Adams Alliance.

DCCA Discount for Online Renewals

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) is pleased to announce that more than 28,000 Hawaii professionals may now renew their licenses online at http://pvl.ehawaii.gov/renewals. The department is offering a 25 percent customer appreciation credit on the renewal fee and a 10 percent discount on the compliance resolution fund fee. The discounts are for online renewals only.

The discounts apply to a several professional licenses.

Instructions for completing the online renewal and details of the online discounts have been mailed to license holders. Emergency Medical Technicians’, Physicians’ and Podiatrists’ renewals will be accepted until midnight on January 31, 2008. All other online renewals this cycle will be accepted until midnight on December 31, 2007. Late renewals will not be accepted online, but must be submitted by mail or in person to:
