Thousands came out to celebrate Hawaii's admission to the USA as the 50th State on August 21, 1959. Celebrations were huge at Iolani Palace (the territorial and state capitol until 1969). A colorful parade, patriotic speeches, music and a 21 gun cannon salute were part of the original festivities. Hawaii State Archive Photo.

Hawaii Strengthens Small Business Role in Regulatory Process

According to the SBA's John McDowell, Hawaii has "strengthened the role of its 112,000 small businesses in the state's regulatory process with the passage of Act 217." The bill, recently signed into law by Governor Linda Lingle, requires state agencies to consider their impact on small business earlier in the regulatory process and it expands the duties of Hawaii's Small Business Regulatory Review Board. It also strengthens the current statute by requiring agencies every other year to review all existing rules that affect small business to ensure that they continue to serve their public purpose. SB 188, now Act 217 was introduced by State Senator Sam Slom (R-8th), SBH president.
