    Rep. Lynn Finnegan Reviews
    2006 Legislature at SBH Sunrise

    Rep. Finnegan
The Minority Leader of the state House of Representatives, Lynn Finnegan (R-32nd) will review the recently concluded 2006 legislative session at the next Small Business Hawaii Sunrise Networking Breakfast, 7am, Thursday May 25, at the Pineapple Room, Macy’s Ala Moana Center.

Finnegan, a member of the House for 6 years, was chosen Minority Leader earlier this year and is considered one of Hawaii’s brightest political stars.

Last month’s speaker was attorney and co-author of the best selling new book Broken Trust, Randy Roth.

SBH monthly Sunrise offers great networking, a terrific speaker and full buffet breakfast.

Sponsor for the May Sunrise is Peter Matsumoto’s Century Small Business Services.

Members enjoy a Free exhibit area. New attendees present brief introductions. The public is welcome. Parking is free and easy.

The cost is still only $20 for members and their guests who pay in advance; $30 for non-members and at the door if space is available.

No Small Business Help from Legislature?

The 23rd State Legislature is scheduled to adjourn May 4 — and so far there still is no unemployment, workers comp or tax relief, even though the estimated state cash surplus has surpassed $600 million.

As this issue went to press there still is the likelihood of:

  • Higher business and consumer fees
  • An increase in the cigarette tax
  • A change in the Transient Accomodations Tax (TAT) as it applies to time share owners
  • Higher salaries for Department of Education bureaucrats ($115,000, $120,000)
  • No protection from expanded eminent domain property takings
  • Multimillion dollar special interest tax credits
  • No tax rebate (as required by the state Constitution)
  • No real property tax relief
  • An even worse version of the gas cap bill
  • Expanded bottle tax (to 69 ounce containers)
  • More state debt
  • VEBA trusts for public unions that will exclude retirees and push health care costs higher.

Emphasis has been on yet more money for education — already a $2.2 billion annual recipient—the homeless, alternative energy and more social welfare spending.

Bills moved into murky conference committees where legislators play “let’s make a deal” with taxpayer money and freedom. SBH will publish a detailed review of the session and its annual ratings list of each of the 76 (51 House and 25 Senate) legislators. You can monitor the session from links and alerts on our website: www.smallbusinesshawaii.com and the RSS feed from HawaiiReporter.com, which appear on our front page.
