    'Broken Trust' Forum to
    Feature Book Authors, More

Broken Trust the book On Wednesday, July 5, 11 am to 1:30 pm, Small Business Hawaii will be presenting a public forum on the Bishop Estate scandal and public corruption entitled, "Broken Trust – Lessons Learned." The event will be held at the Hale Koa Hotel and is open to the public.

This forum will bring all the major participants in one of the biggest issues in Hawaii's history together for the first time to discuss all aspects of this important part of local business and politicaldecisionmaking and to answer your questions.

It is a very special, very unique opportunity to listen and to learn.

In April, Randy Roth, co-author of the new local best seller, "Broken Trust," was the speaker at the monthly SBH Sunrise Networking Breakfast. The event was sold out and people were turned away. What came out of that meeting was a desire to continue and expand the discussion of the impact of the Bishop Estate on local business, government and land policy.

Malia Zimmerman of HawaiiReporter assembled a panel to tell more of the Broken Trust story and to discuss what may happen next.

Following an 11:30 luncheon in the Banyan Room, a panel will discuss various aspects of the issue. All have first hand knowledge of the events. Included speakers are:

U.S. Congressman Ed Case, who discussed his first hint that something was wrong at Bishop Estate while he seved in the Hawaii state Legislature, and problems that surfaced at the legislature, political corruption entrenched in the most powerful leaders in the state, and what he tried to do about it

Beadie Dawson, attorney and Native Hawaiian community activist, will relate restlessness at Kamehameha School, stories of courage from within and the famous march to Bishop Estate.

Randy Roth who analyzes problems with Hawaii's Supreme Court and the process of appointing trustees.

Federal Judge Samuel King, co-author of "Broken Trust," will discuss why they wrote the origianl essay, what it really said and what happened afterward.

David Shapiro, The Honolulu Advertiser (formerly Managing Editor of the Honolulu Star Bulletin) suggests why the media wasn't more aggressive in covering the Bishop Estate, why he decided to publish the essay in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and was there retaliation?

Bob Watada, then the head of the state Campaign Spending Commission, tells what came after the essay was published, how the investigation proceeded and who was involved, what was discovered in terms of political corruption, and how the trust was being used to finance political campaigns.

If you like Law & Order: Criminal Intent, you'll love this forum.Bring an associate.

Reservations for the event, including validated parking and a full luncheon, will be $50 per person (SBH members and their guests) who pay in advance, or $65 for non-members and at the door if space is available.

Fill out the reservation form on page 8 and mail to SBH with your payment. Reservations made in order received. No tickets mailed – pick up at registration desk July 5. Your guests are welcome at member price. Refunds until July 3.

Advanced paid reservations required by Friday, June 30.
