    Wally "Famous" Amos Returns
as SBH Sunrise Speaker for July

    Wally Amos

Wally Amos, owner of the Chip N' Cookie store in Kailua, will discuss &"How Not to Sell a Company" at the next Small Business Hawaii SBH Sunrise Networking Breakfast, 7 am, Thursday, July 27, in the Pineapple Room, Macy's, Ala Moana.

May's scheduled speaker State Rep. and Minority Leader, Lynn Finnegan, was sick and unable to speak so SBH turned the entire session into an enjoyable and profitable networking only session. SBH will schedule these sessions without a speaker at least twice a year.

John Mongahan head of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB), will review the visitor industry at the August 31 SBH Sunrise.

SBH Sunrise offers great networking, a teriffic speaker and full buffet breakfast for all those who attend.

Sponsor for the July Sunrise is Techniques Hawaii.

Members enjoy a free exhibit area. The public is welcome and parking is free. Cost: $20 for members and their guests who pay in advance; $30 for non-members and at the door if space is available.

June's SBH Sunrise Breakfast with Pam Chambers is sold out!

    Election 2006

    Deadline For Candidates Loom

On July 25 at 4:30 pm Hawaii’s electorate will know who is in and who is not for the fall elections. That is the filing deadline. Several candidates have pulled papers (but not filed yet) for more than one office.

All 51 members of the state House, 13 of 25 state Senators, the Governor & Lt. Governor, two U.S. House seats, one U.S. Senate seat, County Council, state school board and Office of hawaiian Affairs (OHA)contests are on the agenda. There will be state constitutional amendments and City Charter amendments to vote on as well. Between now and then, SBH will inform business owners on the candidates and issues.

As previously reported, two Senate and five House members will not be back next year. Senator Brian Kanno (D), subject of a recent state ethics commission investigation, decided to retire. Sen. Bob Hogue (R) is running for the 2nd Congressional District seat. In the House, Brian Schatz (D) gave up his seat to run for Congress while veteran lawmakers, all Democrats, Dennis Arakaki, Helene Hale and Ezra Kanoho are retiring. Republicans Chris Halford (Maui) and Hawaii Kai’s Bud Stonebraker will not run again. Rumors persist that Rep. Jun Abinsay may retire for health reasons while Senate President Robert Bunda may pursue other options.

State Senators (or seats) up for election and four year terms this year: 2nd, Russell Kokubun; 4th Shan Tsutsui; 8th, Sam Slom; 9th, Les Ihara; 10th, Brian Taniguchi; 11th, Carol Fukunaga; 13th, Suzanne Chun Oakland; 14th, Donna Mercado Kim; 15th, Norman Sakamoto; 19th (Kanno) open; 20th, Will Espero; 24th (Hogue) open; 25th, Fred Hemmings.

The latest update for candidate filings can be found online late Friday afternoon at the Hawaii Elections website: http://www.hawaii.gov/elections/

The candidate filing list will be updated daily the week before the filing deadline of July 25. Files are PDFs and require Adobe Reader software.
