    Legislature Heads for Adjournment
    Still No Business Relief

Voting day at Hawaii State Senate

The 23rd State Legislature is scheduled to adjourn May 4, and so far there still is no meaningful business or tax relief, even though the estimated state cash surplus has surpassed $600 million. Emphasis has been on more money for education — already a $2.2 billion annual recipient — the homeless, alternative energy and more social welfare spending. The supplemental budget is UP.

Gas cap repeal, at least in the state House, raids on the Hurricane Relief fund, Rainy Day Fund and now Beverage Container Deposit (Bottle) tax fund are ongoing.

No workers comp, mandated health care or unemploymernt compensation tax relief for business is moving.

Fee increases, a cigarette tax increaseand a back door Internet Sales Tax are also moving. Not moving is tax relief.

The second major voting crossover is Tuesday, April 11. Then conference committee horsetrading begins with no certainties till adjournment.
