Legislative Session Begins January 19
The 2005 Hawaii State Legislature convenes its annual 60- working day session Wednesday, January 19, 2005. It will conclude May 5. SBH will keep you posted onmajor issues.
With the stinging General Election Republican losses in the Housethe GOP lost a net 5 seats and now accounts for only 10 of the 51 seats and no gains in the Senate (5 of 25 seats), the majority party Democrats can have their way with the minorityand the taxpayers. New tax initiatives, more business regulation and special funds will most likely be in order with neither the Governor no Republican lawmakers able to stop the Democrat juggernaut. There is no veto proof legislature.
Issues still hanging and in need of repairinclude: workers comBoth the Senate and House reorganized its committee structure increasing the number of committees. Added were a separate Senate Higher Education committee and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee. The Media was added to the Arts, Science & Technology Committee. New Senators include Clayton Hee and Clarence Nishihara, both Democrats.Robert Bunda continues as senate president.
The House now has a total of 19 committees. Added for 05: Hawaiian Affairs (separate from Water & Land Use); Housing (separate from Human Services), and Legislative management
New Representatives include: Lyla Berg (D); Rita Cabanilla (D); Pono Chong (D); Joshua Green (D);Kymberly Pine (R); Kameo Tanaka (D); Clifton Tsuji (D); Ryan Yamane(D) and Kyle Yamashita (D).
House leadership reorganized with Calvin Say retaining control as Speaker of the House. Brian Schatz and Scott Saiki who made a bid to oust Say were instead ousted from leadership themselves. Sylvia Luke who joined theDemocrat young turks is now Judiciary chair replacing Eric Hamakawa.
