    Tribute to President Ronald Reagan

More than five hundred people paid their last respects to President Ronald Reagan at St. Andrew’s Cathedral on Friday, June 11. The two-hour long tribute to America’s 40th president, who passed away on June 5, featured speakers who knew him. They included former City Councilman and White House Fellow Mufi Hannemann, Retired Navy Captain Gerald Coffee, and the Governor’s Senior Policy Advisor Linda Smith, who worked in the President’s Office of Management and Budget from 1980 to 1982. SBH President & CEO Sam Slom was the master of ceremonies.

Members of the public had the opportunity to honor the former President by presenting flowers and lei at the end of the ceremony. Significant gifts included a Steering Koa Canoe Paddle, Hawaiian Paniolo Hat and Feather Lei, a Hawaiian Ukulele, and a Kukui Nut Lei which was presented by Lt. Governor James “Duke” Aiona and his wife in acknowledgment of President Reagan’s work in healing the world from communism and terrorism. The guest registry as well as all the gifts will be sent to the Reagan Presidential Library in California.

SBH members contributing to the tribute included Helen Morita, Dale and Darci Evans of Charley’s Taxi, Malia Zimmerman, Jay McWillams and Laura Brown of Hawaii Reporter, Syl and Mike Kop of Hula Supply Center, Jerry Stanfield of Jerry Stanfield Productions, Gary “Sport” Fruth of Big Red Q Printing, Cindy’s Lei Shop, Signs by DEY, Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, Melvin Ah Ching Productions and Small Business Hawaii.
