Legislature Set to Open January 21

The 2004 State Legislature will convene Wed. January 21, 2004 at 10 am for a 60-day session lasting until May.

After the usual pomp and circumstance, flowers, food, and entertainment on Hawaii's unique opening day, it is expected to be a rough legislative year as the Democrat majority seeks to block any advances from the Lingle Administration. It also will be a major election year in which Republicans will try to increase their numbers in both the House and Senate where Democrats continue to hold comfortable majorities (36 - 15 in the House; 20 - 5 in the Senate).

Taxes, fees, more spending and debt will be on the agenda as well as increased employer mandates. Problems with workers' compensation must be addressed; the Insurance Commissioner will propose positive solutions to WC and casualty insurance fraud problems. Business must have a prominent presence during this year's session.

SB News and the SBH website will keep business owners up to date with the latest issues and progress.
