April 2004 | Lead Photo & Story

Junior Achievement named the 2004 Business Hall of Fame Laureates last month. They were introduced at a formal dinner held at the Sheraton Waikiki on March 16 and recognized by the Hawaii State Legislature (above) on March 15. The Legislature meets daily until May 6 at the "Big Square Building" in downtown Honolulu. The Hawaii Super Ferry (bottom left) is to set sail in 2006. State Negotiator Ted Hong (bottom right) will be April's SBH Sunrise speaker. More details about SBH Sunrise at this link.
Partisan Legislature Heads For May 6 Adjournment
The 22nd State Legislature whiuch convened its 60-day working session Wednesday, January 21, has turned into a highly partisan, non-reform-minded body controlled by majority status quo Democrats in both the House and Senate who seem more concernedf about the upcoming November elections than they do about the welfare of hawaiis people and the invigoration of Hawaiis business climate. The Session is scheduled to adjourn May 6.
The first crossover of bills from each house took place on March 9. Hundreds of bills were passed with minimal debate or objections. this date also signalled the death knell for many bills that were either not heard in committee or were not passed out of committee for a floor vote. Many of these bills would have reformed education, lowered taxes, eliminated business fees, improved procurement. Instead, the majority measures that did progress raised taxes, fees, spending, thwarted meaningful reform and were more partrisan than in anyones recent memory. It was extremely frustrating for several key business organization representatives who witnessed attempt to punish employers, reward unions and retain the imbalance between business and labor.

JA Hawaii Inducts 6 New Business Laureates
Junior Achievement of Hawaii's 2004 Hawaii Business Hall of Fame Laureates were officially inducted in an awards ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel on March 16.
However, before the dinner, awardees were present at the unveiling of the permnent JA / UH Business Hall of Fame interactive exhibit at the University of Hawaii's College of Busines Administration on Saturday, March 13. The idea and concept for the permanent Hall was the brainchild of SBH's Sam Slom in 1990. With the help of others, including former UH business Dean, David McClain, the exhibit became a reality.
On March 15, the Laureates were honored in floor ceremonies at the State House (organized by Rep. Jun Abinsay) and Senate (organized by Sen. Sam Slom).
The 2004 Laureates included: David S. DeLuz, Sr., Chairman of David DeLuz, Sr. Enterprises (a Big Island auto dealership); Linda Fernandez, president and CEO, Fernandez Entertainment and her late husband Kane, pioneers in the carnival and family entertainment industry, Donald H. Graham, Jr., developer and principal, GMR LLC, Michael H. Lyons II, former Sr. VP, Bank of Hawaii and well known Maui philanthropist, the late Christopher B. Hemmeter, noted resorts developer and James "Jim" S. Romig, Founder and CEO, Hilo Hattie, a subsidiary of Pomare. Fernandez and Romig are SBH members.
The JA Hawaii program was started in 1990. SBH serves on the nominating and judging panel along withg other major business organizations.
