This momentous event for our little adventurer coincided with the world-circling book tour of Mark Skousen. Skousen is well known for his numerous free market economics books, financial newsletter FORECASTS & STRATEGIES, and articles in LIBERTY magazine. We exchanged books and had a very nice visit. When he returned home the next day he wrote:
"We finally made it home, exhausted, but wanted to write and tell you how much I've enjoyed reading GULLIBLE. I think you have something there! I think it would make an excellent recommended supplement to my ECONOMIC LOGIC textbook."
I also had a chance to read Skousen's latest book, THE MAKING OF MODERN ECONOMICS: THE LIVES AND IDEAS OF THE GREAT THINKERS, and found it the most fascinating, entertaining, and readable presentation of economic history I have ever seen. The best thing about it is the unabashed free market perspective that smashes the myths of interventionist economists. I highly recommend this for translation and publication projects abroad.
KOREAN: Terrific news has been received from Korea. K-mee Jung was introduced to me by founders of the Reason Club and Students in Free Enterprise at Hawaii Pacific University, Winston and Christina Posegate. K-mee is a very energetic and enterprising individual who recently reported: "JG finally found a Korean publishing company. Last Monday, I emailed a part of my translation with project synopsis and the poster which you gave me before to over 20 publishing companies. On the same day, I received five phone calls from publishing companies. And on the next day, I got more calls. I think most publishing companies which showed me their interest are well-known in Korea. Among them, I jumped into conclusion that Moonwhamadang Publishing Co., could be the best one. The first reason I chose Moonwhamadang Publishing Co. is that it mainly publishes books for economics, adminsistration, management, and socially controversial issues. Mr. Hong, who is in the charge of the company, gave me an enthusiastic impression. He was very interested in this book. Furthermore he was understanding enough to work with me. He made sure that the J.G. story could be one of the most useful stories for Koreans."
JAPANESE: The Japanese serialization of JG by Keizai Magazine is now in its third very successful month. Professor Toshio Murata, former President of the Yokohama College of Commerce, translator of von Mises' HUMAN ACTION, and lead organizer for the project met with publishers and translators recently. Of this meeting he wrote: "Otsuji, Nishimura, Takahashi, Toshio, Meiko, and Nakatani met at a Japanese restaurant in the Meridian Pacific Hotel, Shinagawa, Tokyo. We had a very happy time talking about various things, and sharing translation experiences with other members. They are pleased to see the printed magazine carrying the fruits of their efforts.
When I asked Miss Fukuzato about the reputation of AJG by the readers, she told me that the publisher had monitors to evaluate the magazine articles and their opinions were in favor of AJG. The monitors told her that the stories were very interesting. Not only AJG taught them the importance of freedom, but also they could vividly imagine how the people in Russia and other countries under communist influence had suffered. I conveyed the opinions of those monitors to the translators and all of them were satisfied."
STUDENTS IN FREE ENTERPRISE (SIFE): Students in Free Enterprise is an international organization with a club on the campus of Hawaii Pacific University. For the past two years these students have been active in promoting the book to other SIFE teams around the world. This year the HPU team made a successful presentation of their activities, including the use of JG in university classrooms, at a national competition involving a hundreds of schools nationwide. They achieved the rank of top sixteen schools in the nation. This is only the beginning for a great team that has more plans for next year. Says Holmberg: "...I have been thinking along lines similar to those you outline above, and would like to suggest that you consider letting us publish Mats' translation of JG as a netbased pdf file for downloading....A printout of the book would of course be offered as a 'proof copy for review' to the Swedish library services, and in case they order a reasonable number of copies (anything in excess of, say, 200), this would provide a basis for an initial small printed edition, which we would then also use to let our trade sales reps try to convince the bookstores to order." BULGARIAN: Anelia Manova has been juggling a very busy course schedule as one of the best performing students at Hawaii Pacific University and has simultaneously been translating JG. Thanks to Tomislav Krsmanovic we have been in contact with Iskra Petrova-Vateva who is considering publication in Bulgaria. Reports Manova: "Dear Ken, I just received an e-mail from Iskra in Bulgaria. She writes me she has already recieved the first two chapters of the book, which she had asked me to send her so she can have an idea of the style and quality of the Bulgarian translation." CHINESE: A couple years ago JG was serialized in the HONG KONG ECONOMIC JOURNAL under the guidance of Joy-Shan Lam. Since then a former student of mine, Jin Ai, has just returned to mainland China and has a plan for JG in Chengdu. Jin Ai writes: "Aloha, Professor Schoolland, I am in China now. I am now working to discuss the publication of your book with some my friends. I will report to you about the progress." THE BALKANS: The redoubtable Tomislav Krsmanovic continues to add book after book to the list of liberty literature in the Balkans. Not only has he arranged a connection in Bulgaria, but he has also been working toward more publications in Montenegro, Slovakia, the Ukraine, and a new edition in Serbia. Says Krsmanovic: "I got this evening a call from Ljubomir Jovanovic, from Bratunac,Serbian Republic...Same material could be published in Montenegro (only to replace covers). Please inform me about your opinion about this. I am continuing contacts with other publishers."
THE BALTICS: Monika Lukasiewicz, Steve Browne, and Virgis Daukas are again featuring JG in theatrical skits this summer for the Liberty English Camp, which plays host to dozens of people from all over Eastern Europe who are learning English with literature about the free market. This program will be held later this month and will transport many of its students to the ISIL conference in France this July. I plan to be there, too. The lesson learned from camp last year: simplify the vocabulary for those studying English in other countries. That is what we intend to work on. Is such a story that started in Hawaii relevant to Eastern Europe? Says Lukasiewicz: OTHER: There have been several people giving considerable thought to the potential of JG for some form of internet and media development: Louk Jongen, Louis van Gils, Susan Wells, Doug Scribner, Kristi Stone, Tracy Ryan, Mike and Cindy Powell. I'll let you know as any of these projects progress. Other projects are soon to be realized in Esperanto (Andy Nousen), and new editions in Norwegian (Bent Johan Mosfjell) and Romanian. Valentina Nicolaie has already translated the second edition of JG into Romanian and Cris Comanescu has been diligently trying to prod the publishers. Faisal Hassan sent this note about the Somali edition, which he has almost completed: "I am still working on JG and hope to finish before June, 2001. I shall update you in the near future." And Barun Mitra of the Liberty Institute in New Delhi, who translated JG into Bengali, reports: "I think we will have at least one version of Jonathan Gullible in the coming year. I have some money to do it. The only thing that is holding me back is my desire to do a project incorporating JG in some other kind of economic activities." We have also had some correspondence with Rick Platt, Director of Sales and Marketing for Stossel in the Classroom and with John Holzmann, Co-Owner Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd.-International Home Schoolers Curriculum. Hopefully these will lead to more use of JG in classrooms around the country. My appreciation also goes to the many who have contributed to JG projects through ISIL, especially Jim Elwood and Vince Miller, and to Gordon Kitsuwa and Don Seppa who have distributed many copies to libraries in their respective communities. Also to Dick Rowland and Susan Wells, indefatigable promoters of JG to numerious individuals around the US. For the new edition, praises go to several people who spent many hours helping to edit the new edition: i.e. Lucile Schoolland, Flora Ling, Stuart Hayashi, and Harry Harrison. Much credit goes to the new illustrator Randall Lavarias, the book designer Orlando Valdez, and project manager for Edwards Enterprises, Scott Kishimori. And, above all, to the publisher Sam Slom, President of Small Business Hawaii.
